    Uh oh...

    Day 6: 8,607
    Day 7: 8,607
    Day 8: 12,026

Yeah, so the bad news is that I didn't write at all on Thursday or Friday. That means that even with the nearly 4,000 words I've written today, I'm still not on pace to finish until December 4th. The good news is, I have all day tomorrow to write as well and I may even do a little more writing tonight if I'm feeling up to it. I realized that the end of the week is just no good for me because I'm so tired from the long week of working, so don't be surprised if I end up doing this every week. That is, writing a lot on the weekend and early in the week and then tapering off toward the end of the week. Luckily, the month ends on a weekend, so if the goal is in sight, there will be nothing to stop me.

Jewelie and I went to Breaking New Grounds today and, in case your math skills aren't the greatest, I wrote 3,419 words. I worked for three hours and that put me at 1,139 words per minute -- my highest words per hour total yet. The previous high was 922.

I'm feeling good about where the story is going. I'm about to introduce a new character that I didn't even know about until today. Alright.. fuck it.. let me give you the basic plot of the story right now:

First of all, for those of you who didn't already know, the story is called The Impostors. Basically, there is a group of impostors pretending to be Santa Claus, Sandman, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, Cupid, Father Time and Mother Earth. The seven of them formed a group known as P.U.L.S.E, or Protectors of the Untold and Lost Secrets of Earth, headed by Mr. Time and Mrs. Earth. The group now only consists of Father Time and Mother Earth, Tooth Fairy, who is there daughter, and Sandman, who is her husband. That's as much as I'll tell you right now. I'll give you more information on the story in a later update. Is this a ploy to get you to keep reading my blogs or just laziness? I guess you'll never know... but it's just laziness.

So yeah, I like the personalities I've created for all seven of the fictional characters. Sophie seems like a pretty generic young hero, which I'm trying to work on. She's solid, but not spectacular. Like I said, I'm introducing another character or two, which should liven up the story a bit and hopefully push Sophie's character development along. We'll see.

The only "impostor" I've introduced is Evil Sandman and he's pretty cool. I have an idea of what I'm going to do for the rest of them, but nothing's set in stone yet. We'll see how I'm feeling when I get to that part of the story.

My goal for tomorrow is to get to 16,000 words. I should be able to do it as long as I actually write while I'm watching the Patriots game. I'll probably post another update tomorrow and let you know how I did. Wish me luck!

    -Shawn

P.S.- My fiction writing is a lot better than my blog writing. I'm well aware that I may carry on a bit during these updates, but that's because I have a lot to say, but try to keep it as concise as possible and it usually just ends up a mess. Forgive me.

    NaNoWriMo Days 4 and 5

    Day 4: 8,294
    Day 5: 8,607

Let's start with what everyone's talking about -- Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States of America. Very, very cool. Also, Sarah Palin will not be one breath away from being the next president of the United States of America. Even cooler. Let's be honest about this, Obama being elected is a big deal. There are people who still remember the days of Martin Luther King Jr. and segregation. They remember kids being blasted with high powered hoses and tortured for wanting to go to school and have the same rights as white people. Sure, there are still a lot of narrow-minded people out there. 44% of people who said race was a factor when they voted said that they voted for McCain. That's unfortunate, but we, as a nation, have come a long, long way and I can honestly say for the first time in a long time, I'm sort of proud to be an American today.

On to the WriMo! Jewelie e-mailed me this awesome application for spreadsheet. Basically, it's a chart and each day you enter your total word count and the ammount of time you spent writing and it calculates all kinds of things for you. Words per hour, words per day, words left, % change in pace, goal for tomorrow, projected finish date, percent complete and writing hours left. You also rate your morale on a scale of 1-10 and leave comments if you like. It creates a pie chart of % left compare to %.

So, according to this application, I have 55 hours of writing left this month.
I'm 17% complete. I only wrote 313 words today, but that's because I got out of work at four and Jewelie had to work at five. I didn't want to drive home for a couple hours and then have to drive back, so I went to Star's a took a nap. I got home around 9:30, wrote for half an hour, had some dinner and now Sally and I are updating you on my progress. Jewelie is watching Dr. Horrible next to me and it's awesome. Seriously awesome. I love Joss Whedon. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to stay up and watch the whole thing (again) tonight, so I'm not going to get as much sleep as I hoped I would. Also, I have a crush on Nathan Fillion.. and Neil Patrick Harris. I think I have a better chance with NPH.

So, I wrapped up Chapter 3 today and will work on Chapter 4 tomorrow. I should actually get a bit of writing done tomorrow. I'd like to get at least 2,000, but we'll see. The weekends are obviously where I'm going to get most of my work done, but I can't have many more 300 word days like today or it's going to be more difficult.

Well, I'd like to focus more of my attention on Dr. Horrible now, so I'm going to go now. Oh yeah. Jewelie and I went to the Portsmouth Tea Company yesterday and wrote for a few hours. The owner was very nice and it was quiet, which was good for writing. It's his first cafe location and while I like Breaking New Grounds a lot more, we'll probably end up back there a couple more times this month. Check it out if you get the chance.

    NaNoWriMo: Day 3 Update

    Day 3: 5064 words

Sally the Update Cat is back in action.. and she's very warm on my lap.

Well, I somehow managed to write a little over 1,000 words today. I had absolutely no motivation, mostly due to the fact that I have been ridiculously tired all day. Fortunately, that 1,000 words keeps me on pace to reach my goal. Also, I stopped writing tonight at a good spot and it will be easy to get rolling again tomorrow and that's always a good feeling.

So, Jewelie told me an idea that our friend Peter had. He thinks that any of us (meaning the people we know who are doing NaNo) who "win" or get to 50,000 words should have our first drafts published in an anthology. I think it's a really neat idea. It'll chronicle our NaNoWriMo 2008. It'll be nice because all first drafts suck, so none of us will have to feel bad about how poorly our stories are written, haha. As of right now, I'm sure that Jewelie, Peter, Josh and I will reach the goal. I like the to think that Matthew will, but I'm not sure that he's even started yet. I also heard that Heidi was going to attempt it, but I'm not sure if that's actually happening.

Tomorrow I am going to Matthew's house to watch the election unfold, but I still intend to bust out 2,000 words and another update. I would post a brief summary of my story so far, but I'm afraid people would think I'm an idiot if they just read my description and not the actual story because, to be honest, I just tried to type a little synopsis and it sounded retarded. Maybe when I get a little further in the story I'll post a more broad overview of the story. Also, I'm not afraid to let people read it when I'm finished, so I'll happily send out copies to people I really trust. Well, I need to sleep. Hell, maybe I'll attempt that coveted 5,000 word day tomorrow. Then again, maybe not. As usual, wish me luck. Goodnight!

    Days one and two

    Day 1 Word Count: 998
    Day 2 Word Count: 4058

Well, it's time to update for the last two days. Yesterday was insane and I was only able to write a little under1,000. In order to make the goal of 50,00 words in 30 days you'd have to write 1,667 per day. Jewelie and I went to Breaking New Grounds today and I was able to write a little over 3,000 more, so I am currently on pace to achieve my goal.

Here's how yesterday went for me. I got out of work at two and then went to hang out with Jewelie's family. After that we went home, gave Sophie to my parents and went to the cafe, so I didn't even start writing until about 7:30. I started writing The Impostors, but thought the beginning sucked and switched to Regret, a novel I've been working on sporadically for about a year now. At 9:00 we left the cafe -- Jewelie went to a party and I went to Al's house. I restarted Impostors to Al's and am happy with the new beginning. Now the story has some great direction and I am positive I will make the 50,000 word goal. I'm also pretty certain that 50,000 words will not finish the novel.

Another fun story that isn't related to writing... we took Sophie trick or treating for the first time on Friday night and it was a lot of fun. We couldn't find her Patriots Cheerleader costume, so we went and got her a pirate costume. She was very cute and she did very well with strangers. I would have to kneel down at each house and tell her to say "Trick" "or" "Treat" one word at a time. She was also good about only taking the ammount of candy that people told her to, except for at the Haas' house, where they were giving out full-sized candy bars and she took six. It was really funny.

Alright, back to the writing: I don't work at Market Basket tomorrow, so I should be able to knock out at least another 2,000 words.  I also requested Wednesday off from UPS so I could stay up late and watch the election results, so I'll probably get quite a bit of writing done on on Tuesday night and possibly Wednesday afternoon as well. If I could get to 10,000 words by Wednesday night I'll be happy.

Unfortunately, nanowrimo.org is running very slowly right now. From what I've heard, it's always like this on opening weekend, but it gets better as people start to drop out. I'll post a link to my profile on nanowrimo tomorrow night.

Jewelie told me that it was her goal to have her novel sent to publishing companies by next year. I would like to achieve that same goal. I'm actually nervous about how my novel will be received by publishing companies. I'm sure I'll get a lot of "no's" before I get a "yes". I don't like rejection, haha.

Oh well.. I need to finish a novel before it can be published.. and Al is giving me crap for blogging instead of writing, so I'm going to go work on The Impostors.

P.S.- Sally the Update Cat couldn't be with me for this update as I am at Al's house. I assure you that she is doing fine and is actually with me as we speak. I hope for her to be with me through a majority of the updates as this month progresses.

Bad news with two days to go...

It's time for my second update of the NaNoWriMo preseason and, once again, Sally is here to keep me company. She is laying on my chest purring. Her breath is terrible and it's qutie distracting, but she's soft and nice, so I'll let it slide.

Well, there are now two days before NaNoWriMo and all of a sudden I'm faced with a serious handicap. My plan was to go to the cafe (Breaking New Grounds) after work on Saturday, November 1st and write for a good six or seven hours. It turns out, Jewelie's sister, Jessie, and her husband and kids are coming up this weekend and we, understandably, must visit with them. My goal was to write 10,000 words this weekend, but that goal seems unlikely now that I only have one day of the weekend left. I think I will adjust my goal to 6,500 and just attempt to pound out as much as I can on Sunday.

While this is a minor setback, I don't think it will knock me too far off course. I'm sure that everyone participating in this challenge faces obstacles along the way, so I'm not complaining. I may find some time to get a little writing done on Saturday.. maybe I'll even start at midnight and stay up an hour or two before going to bed. Unfortunately, I have to work at 8 on Saturday, so I can't say up too late.

You may have noticed that Josh left me a comment on MySpace and he is definitely writing a choose your own adventure novel. I think that's pretty badass. I'm not sure I could pull it off, but I have no doubt that he'll make it work and it'll be awesome.

Alright, now it's time for one small piece of information about my novel, The Impostors. The main character is a young girl (I haven't decided on an age yet.. I'm thinking somewhere around ten years-old), named Sophie. Yes, she is named after my daughter.. if it ever does get published, I think she'll appreciate it. It is a sort of adventure book aimed at a younger audience. I, once again, don't want to go into too many details right now because I don't know exactly who I can trust.. not that I think my novel is going to be the greatest story ever told, but I still don't want my idea to be stolen. I definitely don't need to be like Stephanie Meyer and end up trusting the wrong person and have my story leaked and then cry about it and refuse to have it published. Give me a break.

Well, nanowrimo.org is down for maintenence and that's annoying, so I think I'm going to go to bed. I have a little over four hours to sleep, so it should be a pretty good night. I hope everyone has a great night and I'll be back tomorrow night with another update... maybe even a word count if I update late enough!!

Thanks for all of the encouragement so far! Keep it coming!
